Safety at the beach…

Safety at the beach…

At the end of last year, we received the devastating news that one of our students drowned in a tragic beach accident. Our thoughts and wishes go out to his family and friends in India, and their representatives and friends here in Australia.

We are writing to you to ask for your assistance to ensure that all potential students are aware of the risks in swimming in beaches in Australia. We have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, however to enjoy them safely, it is essential to obey beach rules.

Surf Life Saving Australia has developed a simple acronym for beach safety:

Surf Life Saving Australia has developed a simple acronym for beach safety:

F-L-A-G-S:

F Find the flags and swim between them - the red and yellow flags mark the safest place to swim at the beach.

L Look at the safety signs - they help you identify potential dangers and daily conditions at the beach.

A Ask a surf lifesaver for some good advice - surf conditions can change quickly so talk to a surf lifesaver or lifeguard before entering the water.

G Get a friend to swim with you - so you can look out for each other's safety and get help if needed. Children should always be supervised by an adult.

S Stick your hand up for help - if you get into trouble in the water, stay calm, raise your arm to signal for help. Float with a current or rip - don't try and swim against it.

And remember – never:

Never swim at unpatrolled beaches (beaches without a lifeguard or flags)

Never ever swim at night

Never swim under the influence of alcohol

Never run and dive into the water

Never swim directly after a meal

Safety at home…
Continuing the theme of safety for our students, we are also asking you to talk to your students about the value of smoke detectors, following the recent deaths of three more students from another Melbourne educational institution.

Since 1999, it has been compulsory for owners of properties in Victoria, including landlords, to install smoke alarms. Please ensure your students are aware that any property they rent MUST be fitted with working smoke detectors. For more information, please see: www.whitehorse.vic.gov.au/page/page.asp?Page_Id=176&h=0

At Deakin, the following measures are in place to assist students with safety awareness:

>        topics of swim and personal safety are introduced in pre-departure materials

>        sessions on personal safety and security are conducted during orientation programs

>        excursions are offered which include a swim safety option

>        advice is given by peer support teams and International Student Advisers.

We thank you for your assistance in understanding and communicating these important personal safety matters to prospective Deakin students.
